Condolences to Artemis Racing and the Royal Swedish Yacht Club
South Beach expresses its deepest condolences to the family of sailor Andrew "Bart" Simpson, his teammates at Artemis Racing, their America's Cup colleagues and the Royal Swedish Yacht Club.
Board Appoints Tom Rogers Commodore; Bon Voyage Staff Commodore Oliva!
As announced in the May WaveLength, Commodore Oliva is on his way to a new career position as a commercial officer at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
At the regular Board Meeting on May 2, the board of directors elected Staff Commodore Tom Rogers (1998) as Commodore effective May 15.
We extend the traditional welcome of "congrats and condolences" to Tom and a bon voyage and salamat datang to Paul.
Opening Day on the Bay: Anabel Wins, Oysters Shucked, Wine Tasted
On April 30, SBYC members celebrated an incredible Opening Day on the Bay. Bob Mason and Martin Fay hosted their traditional annual Oyster Festo, while in the evening a series of wineries held a delicious wine tasting and food pairing to some rockin' tunage.
To cap it off, the club trawler Anabel took third place among powerboats decorated to a "Great Race" them in the Pacific Inter-Club Yachting Association's Opening Day Parade. Wendy Hanrahan took charge of decorations, her third year doing so. Bob Semple brought in a Marine color guard to salute the PICYA judges, with Corporal Quang Bui and Corporal Cesare Riveros from the 23rd Marine Regiment in San Bruno.
May WaveLength Online!
A beautiful new May WaveLength is now online from club member Patti Mangan of Imagine That design studio.
Just click on the image to the left to begin. We've got all our officer reports, and don't miss our features on the club's 25th Anniversary and speeding into the America's Cup Summer of Racing with one of the world's fastest sailors, Mr. Loick "Le Man" Peyron himself.
The cover image from Dave Keane captures the color and madness of South Beach racing.
Just flip open the WaveLength and enjoy sailing season on SF Bay!
Happy 25th Anniversary!
South Beach Yacht Club is turning 25!
Our first organizing meeting was April 1988, at the ILWU labor hall next door (something that Ed Mackin helped arrange). Look for special events and special 25th Anniversary gift items throughout the year, all brought to you by our 25th Anniversary Committee chaired by member Eugene Hu.
In the meantime, read up on our
Club History
, check out Eugene's
Member Photo Slide Show
, and consider these aerial images of industrial South Beach from the 1960s (or 70s?) and a shot member Carolyn Smith took Jan. 20, 2013.
